While investigating the tropical disease leptospirosis in the Peruvian Amazon, an infectious disease specialist from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine has uncovered new, emerging bacteria that may be responsible for up to 40 percent of cases of the disease. Patients with severe forms of leptospirosis have jaundice, renal failure and lung hemorrhage, with high fatality rates. Leptospirosis is a severe, water-borne disease transmitted from animals to humans, with tens of millions of human cases worldwide each year.

	Copaiba (Copaifera sp.) It is a tree that reaches a height of up to 20-30 meters. It is found in Peru, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela in humid lands. The industry produces cosmetics and soaps with the Copaiba oil, but its medicinal properties are also known. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory and healing herb for wounds. The use of the bark oil is recommended in cases of stomach ulcers, infections of the urinary tract, bronchitis. It is also used as a therapy for cases of acariasis and scabies. It is attributed to have anti-carginogenic, anti-inflammatory properties in cases of: tonsillitis, bronchial asthma, herpes, venereal infections, hemorrhoids, arthritis, and muscular pains.
